Samsung PN50B550 - Awesome TV

Review Date: June 4, 2009
Reviewer: Brian A. Appel, Tampa, FL
I researched a lot of TVs and narrowed it down to the Panasonic Viera 50" and the Samsung 50" Plasma. I had seen the A550 Samsung for a long time and when I was finally ready to purchase I noticed the B550 had come out. This model is just a beautiful television. The picture is very crisp and sharp. The blacks are nice and rich. My favorite feature is the swivel base. I was debating whether I wanted to invest in a swivel wall mount or not, but I knew I wanted to be able to view it from angles in the kitchen and towards the outside of my house. This was the only TV this size with a swivel base. Since receiving my TV, I've watched movies, basic cable, HD cable, and playedmy Wii on it and I haven't found one issue. I highly recommend this television.

When purchasing a TV like this, I wanted to go online to get a good deal. I also wanted a merchant I trusted because this is such a large purchase. [...] I purchased this TV with no tax and no shipping, which right there saved me about $200. I wouldn't have walked out of best buy for less than $1800 and I got this TV for $1360. I chose basic delivery to keep it free and the guy wheeled it right into my house next to where I was going to keep it. It was delivered within just a few days after ordering. Very fast and reliable shipping!

I would definitely buy this TV again [...] Can't wait for football season!!
worth the wait

This is a great TV. I was torn between buying last years model the pn50a vs this years pn50b. I decided to get the newer one because its supposed to use half the energy. The pn50B is dramatically cooler to the touch, front and back than last years model.

Picture quality is amazing. The colors and clarity from blue ray and HD Comcast programming in my house is better than I have seen on most other HD TV's at the box stores.

There is more glare on the screen than my old HD Sony tube it has replaced.

Overall, I am very very happy with this plasma and highly recommend it.
Wow. Just......Wow.

Review Date: October 30, 2009
Reviewer: imvho,
Spent almost 2 years researching our next HDTV (I kept putting off our purchase in hopes that CableCard 2.0 would actually be developed...). I studied all the relative benefits & drawbacks of LCD/LED vs Plasma.

PROS:
LCD/LED - No image burn-in risk. Almost no screen reflection, so it's great for rooms with lots of daylight/windows or bright evening lighting.
PLASMA - Richer colors, deeper/darker blacks, greater contrasts, more vivid/natural picture. No "rainbow effect" in fast-moving images. Virtually no image degradation when viewing off-angle (i.e. if seated at an angle to the screen or if standing up).

CONS:
LCD/LED - Blacks are never deep/rich and colors aren't quite as true as plasma. Some viewers will notice "rainbow effects" in fast-action scenes. Picture deteriorates as you move away from "dead-center" (so, people seated at an angle to the TV or standing up will not see a good picture). Considerably more expensive than Plasma for screens 42" or larger.
PLASMA - Screen is more reflective than LCD/LED, which can be distracting in rooms with lots of daylight/windows or bright evening lighting. Potential for image "burn-in". Not available in screen sizes smaller than 42".

I had decided to go with Plasma because picture quality and viewing angle was critical for me, and since I never planned to frequently use a 50" TV as a computer monitor, and didn't plan to watch news channels for hours on end, the burn-in possibility was a non-issue.

And last year had finally settled on this model -- or more accurately the precursor to this model (the PN50A550) --after reading many reviews and ratings, including the ones by that well-known consumer reporting/testing organization, and checking the pictures on the walls of TVs at local big-box retailers. I just waited until the price came down below $1100.

Then about a month ago, a big-box retailer offered a special deal in the Sunday-paper circular: This TV plus a Samsung Blu-ray player (BD-P3600) for $1099 including delivery & set-up & haul-away/recycling (of the old TV), so I impulsively jumped that very day....and couldn't be happier.

Even SD content looks better on this, but HD content is jaw-dropping. The picture is amazing no matter where you are in relation to the screen, and the colors are deep and rich.

At certain times of the day, the room can get quite a lot of daylight, but this TV is actually a bit better than the 36" CRT it replaced as far as annoying reflections go.

This latest model has a grey "TOC" [Touch Of Color, a colored rim], so you really don't even notice it. (Personally, I never saw the big deal about the "TOC" thing; it was just a rim of color around the outside lucite edge. Whoop-dee-doo. And I really didn't want the red edge anyway, so I'm happy they switched to grey.)

This has a pixel-shift function to help eliminate burn-in from steady images (like station IDs, or tickers on CNN/Fox/ESPN/any sports program), plus it has an "eraser" function if you see any slight burn-in. In my research, I found advice that suggested avoiding watching more than an hour at a time of those "ticker" shows for the first 100-200 hours (when the pixels burn the brightest), so we've been following that. My spouse likes NASCAR so by this next weekend, the TV will have gone thru its "break-in" period, so it will experience 3+ hours of NASCAR tickers. Will post back if there was any burn-in.

We currently have this hooked up to only standard cable (our HD Cable box is hooked up to the original HD TV, downstairs in our home-theatre setup...and I refuse to pay Time-Warner another $10/mo rental fee for a box that can't possibly cost them more than $40), but by running the Auto Channel scanning function, we're able to see HD channels for all "local" cable channels (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, PBS, etc).

Sound: Has been fine for everything so far. It's perfectly crisp, with plenty of treble, mid-tones and bass for TV shows, news, kids' movies. Much better than the 8-year-old CRT it replaced, but it's NOT a "theatre" experience; you must get an external audio setup for that, and can't expect it from any TV.

Sidenote: Really nice to have it hooked up to same-brand Blu-ray player! Can do everything with just the TV remote. And if you are a Netflix member, you should check out that P3600 Samsung Blu-ray -- we've watched a lot of streaming Netflix videos thru that Blu-ray player. I have a review posted there.
This TV does not suffer from Burn in problems

Reviewer: D. Sinkovitz, Chicago, IL
I see a lot of people confusing "Burn In" with "Image Retention" on these reviews. This TV does not have any "Burn In" issues. Burn in is when a image (like black bars, a logo, etc) is burned into the screen and you can never get it off. Image retention is when the image of the black bars or logo is left on the screen anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes. All Plasma TV's can experience image retention at first. This is why when purchasing any plasma it's recommended to follow "break in procedures" for the first 50-200 hours of viewing. After the break in period imagine retention pretty much becomes non-existent no matter what you watch, play games, have black bars, etc.... Even if you don't do a proper break in of a plasma it will do nothing to really harm the TV other than experiencing a few annoying moments of seeing image retention when changing the program.

AS for this TV it is absolutely wonderful. You would be hard pressed to find a better quality TV at this price and size. Almost every major professional review has this TV scored 95-100 or 4.5 out of 5 stars. Image Retention is the only downside to any Plasma TV and it's a minor inconvenience that really will only happen in the first 100 hours or so of viewing. Again,it can be avoided completely by properly breaking in the TV. As for Burn in this TV it is pretty much impossible with the pixel shifting technology Samsung incorporated. One website even tried to purposely cause permanent burn in for review purposes by leaving letter box programing running for over 3 weeks and was unable to cause permanent burn in. They were able to remove the black bars by running the image retention eraser (feature in menu)for 3 minutes. Honestly you can't go wrong with this TV. This is one TV (spec wise) where your not sacrificing quality for price. 1080p, 600 hz, 2 million to 1 dynamic contrast ratio, 4 HDMI, energy star complient, and a 50' screen. I've yet to read a professional review or even a reader review that has said anything bad picture/feature wise about this TV (the sound is it's only complaint) However to me that's a moot point as I would never listen to the TV speakers when I have 5.1 surround.

Anyway bottom line is this TV spec wise stacks up to 2-3 thousand dollar sets. The only things its missing is a internet port some newer TV's have and its a little thicker than the newer plasmas out now, but picture wise this TV is a amazing value for the price.
Outstanding, as expected

This is my first HDTV, but I did spend a good couple months shopping around and studying up on my features, pros/cons, etc... First of all the picture is beautiful, but hey, that's to be expected. I love the ample HDMI ports, and as it turns out, the swivel stand ended up being a pretty awesome feature. Plasma is plasma, and there's no getting around the fact that you're going to have some reflective glare if there is a bright window or light behind you. So, in our livingroom at around 6pm when the sunlight is beaming in the side window, we just swivel that baby a little to the right and viola! No glare. I'm also a gamer and despite the fact that my 360 is an older model that uses component instead of HDMI, it still looks gorgeous. I'm dusting off old games that I haven't played in years and it's a whole new experience! I should also mention that I was concerned about the big plasma TV being hot. Some of the floor models I've seen almost turned me off of plasma because they let out noticible ambient heat. But I haven't noticed that at all with this set. Very happy.

Excellent TV/DVD Combo

Review Date: June 21, 2009
Reviewer: James E. Carr, Leesburg, Virginia
I was looking for a replacement tv/dvd combo for our small travel trailer, and being historically a Toshiba TV fan, initially purchased a Toshiba 19LV61k, the latest model in basically the same such combo Toshiba has been producing for a number of years. I took it back immediately - great picture, but tiny speakers with volume so low that you could not hear what people were saying on screen from 3 feet away, even when you had it cranked to the max. Moreover, Toshiba provided no output for an auxiliary speaker system (other than a headphone outlet). After a lot of research, I purchased this Sharp. Unfortunately for me, Amazon did not have it at the time. The current Amazon price of $349.99 with free shipping beats what I paid ABC Warehouse by about twenty bucks (ABC is a great alternative retailer though). In any event, this combo is light as a feather, has a great picture, and ample volume. The model was introduced in January, 2009, and has all the current bells and whistles, including the option of surround sound (toggle it from the audio sub-menu; you will like it) and a coaxial audio output. So far (one month from purchase), we like the combo immensely, and would recommend it. From my research on line and examining different sets at Best Buy and other retail stores, I did not find a better alternative to this tv/dvdcombo in its size range, regardless of cost.

As of April 8, 2010, still going strong and giving good service
The better choice

Review Date: September 9, 2009
Reviewer: N. Gnas,
Basically, if you want a small LCD TV w/DVD built-in, you can choose from Sharp, Toshiba, LG, and some lesser names and chineese brands. Since I've had good luck with Sharp and bad luck with Toshiba in the past, I waited for this model to become available (all summer). So far I am not dissappointed.

Pros: great picture, you can adjust the brightness, backlight, etc to tweak it to your delight. I like the factory settings so far. - Sound is more than adequate for this size TV - Tuner picked up every available signal with a basic, attic-mounted antennae - DVD player works very nicely - viewing angles better than I expected.

Cons: Non-adjustable base ( I don't care because I have it wall-mounted in a bedroom with a nice tiltable mount) - Remote layout ( It's probably not that bad. I'm just used to Samsung's layout and I guess i'd just have to get used to this one). The actual screen size is less than 22 inches. This TV (HxW) is smaller than my 22" Samsung (kitchen - no DVD) because the bezel is thinner and screen is about 21.5" diagonally. So if you have a tight space, that could be a good thing.

Really, I'm thinking this is the best 22" LCD w/DVD out there. The price is not bad and the picture/sound is as good as it gets in this class TV. A decent, swivel-arm, tiltable, wall-mount can be had for 30 bucks. Bought TV thru Video Audio Center without a hitch.
Awsome TV

Originally purchased for my 5th wheel camper, but I don't think it's going to make it out of my bedroom.I set it up just to check it out,and really can't say enough about it.Beautiful picture, sharp, great colors on factory setting. My biggest worry was the sound as flat panels tend to have low volume. Not this one, just fine for my applications i.e. bedroom and camper.sooo... glad I read the reviews between this one and the Toshiba I was going to get. This TV is absolutely awesome!!!
Excellent value for your money.

Reviewer: John N. Fulmore, Payette, Idaho
I have been without a working television for the last 3 years. When I broke down and decided to buy another set, I took my time and went to all my local outlets - WalMart, Best Buy and Staples and priced sets and learned about key features.

I chose this set for the following: great clear picture quality - at least to my eyes, even more important to me - the audio is surprisingly good - it is loud enough and there are enough choices on your audio menu that you can tailor the sound - I would recommend that you use the surround sound feature, the remote control is adequate and there are outputs for computer and catv built in and it is digital ready.

In addition, this unit came with a DVD player, and the quality of the player is excellent. Overall the LC-22DV27UT is worth the money being charged. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!

Are there things I wish it had...yep - 1080 dp. But I am unwilling to pay a considerable amount more for that feature. I also would have preferred a full service espresso bar with a beautiful barista to watch movies with but evidently Sharp has not developed that level of technology or at the very least it is not available to those of us who are not interested in purchasing high dollar home entertainment systems.

There's always hope for the future.
Sharp picture, Sharp DVD play

Have loved having this TV as a secondary! Picture is clear and very good quality. DVD play is quick to start up. With an antenna, a lot of digital TV signals come in. Sound is good in the small room we have it in. Very glad I bought it. Worth every bit of nearly $400 I spent!

Simply amazed!

Review Date: April 29, 2009
Reviewer: Stephanie in NJ, New Jersey
This is my first LCD tv. I spent a lot of time looking at them in stores, reading reviews & finally decided that Samsung would provide me the best value for my money. I purchased this 26" for my bedroom & it's the perfect size. I was a little nervous setting it up but it was so simple. From attaching the stand, hooking it up & setting up the menu options. The picture is amazing! The colors are wonderful, the blacks are not washed out at all but appear rich & dark. There are a number of setting options to achieve the perfect picture for you, including adjusting the backlight. The sound is good, for a bedroom tv I'm not looking for a movie theater experience & quite frankly, I wouldn't expect tv speakers to ever give me that. I would expect to buy separate speakers. The sound is just as good, if not better, then any past tv I have owned. I have a computer desk off to the side & often glance over at the tv and can view the screen just fine from side angles. There's also a sleep timer for turning both off & on. I've watched everything from movies to sports to regular shows. Also, for anyone nervous about getting this tv without HD, it's looks incredible even without the HD! There are tons of connections on this model too, including 3 HDMI (2 in the back & one on the side). There is a PC connection too but I haven't tried that or the game mode. I can't find a single negative thing to say & as a plus, the tv itself has a very classy sharp appearance. Very, very happy!
Great *bargain* 26" Samsung

I just bought this TV for my bedroom. It is the perfect TV for that. It isn't too big that it overpowers the room, and isn't too small either. I know some people complain about the audio. I think it sounds just fine. I wouldn't have even thought about it. Like I said, it is in my bedroom and not meant to be a home theater TV. If you were looking for a home theater TV, get something bigger, and get external sound.
I have FIOS HD TV hooked up and an upconverting DVD player via HDMI ports. The picture looks great right out of the box. I set it to "movie" setting since I leave the room darker. The "dynamic" setting is too bright, but might be ok in a very bright room. The "standard" picture is fine. I highly recommend this TV if you are using the HDMI inputs. The picture leaves something to be desired if you are using the coax input or RCA inputs. Quite honestly, stick to a good old fashioned CRT if you are using analogue connections.
I compared this TV to several others, I couldn't tell the difference in picture quality between it and ones priced up to $300 more. I don't think 1080P is worth the extra money for a 26" TV. Watching fast action like a hockey game, there can be some motion issues, but since it is only a 60 Hz TV, that is expected. The 120 Hz would show a slight improvement, but it isn't bad enough of a distraction to bother me. A lot of people wouldn't even notice, but some would. Again, it is minor.
I'm very happy with the picture quality in general, as long as it is a digital input, and especially high def. The colors are accurate and the blacks are nice and dark. Dark scenes do not get blurred together, you can see the difference in black levels easily.
If you are looking to spend less than $500 or even $600 for a TV, and you are using digital connections, this is the TV for you.
By the way, Best Buy sells this for $400. Not sure why everyone else has it for more.

Bought this to replace a Toshiba 26AV502U I bought just 6 months ago. This is a much much nicer set. The Toshiba had a very uneven backlight & horrible blacks. The Samsung is much better on both fronts. While it can't match my CRT Projector or CRT tube set as far as blacks go, it's pretty good for a LCD set, especially one that's CCFL lit. Picture quality is excellent, don't pay extra for 1080P on a TV this size! Has no problems with an HDMI signal over a 35' cable. Sound quality is mediocre as other reviewers have pointed out, but I wasn't expecting more.
Nice LCD TV

I don't have any complaints but I've only had it for a week. I purchased this TV for my bedroom and it's the perfect size. Big enough for viewing but small enough not to take over the room. Since I don't have cable in my bedroom I only use it to watch DVD movies. It has a convenient button (P.Size) that adjusts a widescreen movie so that it fills up the whole TV screen without the black bars on top and bottom. The sound is just fine for a smaller room. I used different features in the Menu to adjust the picture and sound.

I also recently purchased a Samsung LN32B360 for my living room and I don't notice much of a difference. The only thing I prefer about my 32" is that you can twist the screen on its stand to adjust the view angles. You can't tilt or twist this 26".

Also, if you are concerned about the red coloring along the bottom of the screen, I don't even notice it anymore. I was concerned about buying the TV because I don't like red and it doesn't go with my bedroom colors but it isn't a problem.

Reviewer: D. Cederquist,
I really love this Tv, the service was great delivered in three days.
The picture is excellent. if you have trouble with sound which you will especially using an antenna get Stereo speakers sounds great. seems like your sound can be bad because the carrier signal maybe low. but this is only if your using an antenna. I live fourty eight miles from the transmitters. our antenna has an amplifier on it but it is old twenty three years so were buying a new one this month.
Anyways this tv is just great you can adjust the picture size to suit what dvd your watching. you can plug your computer or camera into it.
But the picture is wow!!!! vivid and this is only a 720p. The size is right for our home. I am really happy with it!!!! I also read that samsungs are one of the better tv's. So buy with confidence!!!!

Product Description

Beautiful inside and out, the Samsung Touch Of Color T260HD LCD monitor is a great way to get the most out of your PC--as well as watch your favorite 1080p HDTV broadcasts. It features an embedded DTV tuner that enables you to watch digital HD broadcasts without a special receiving set. And with six image input terminals, you can connect several pieces of digital equipment to the T260HD and use them simultaneously. Two HDMI connections make your monitor a multimedia centerpiece. Additionally, SRS TruSurround XT is embedded to improve audio performance.

The contrast between light and dark colors on the screen is what makes images stand out. The bigger the difference between light and dark images, the more vibrant images will appear. With an amazing dynamic contrast ratio of 10,000:1 you’ll enjoy sharper image quality that’s sure to catch your eye. You'll also make a style statement with Samsung's new Touch of Color design, which features a hint of color naturally blended into the traditional piano black frame.

The T260HD is designed to be extremely efficient and uses up to a third less power than other monitors in its class. The unique SoftPower off function lets you put the monitor in standby mode right away, using just 0.3 W of power. It comes with a monitor stand that can tilt up to 20 degrees for optimal viewing and a full-feature remote control. The monitor's speakers reside underneath the screen and provide a total of 6 watts of audio power (3 watts per channel).

Best monitor I have ever owned

Review Date: July 23, 2008
Reviewer: Doug Oriard,
The Samsung T260HD is the best monitor I've ever owned. I was using dual 19 inchers (Samsung 940BX and Samsung 971P) and this blows both of them away. I'm an amateur photographer and my photos look amazing on this monitor -- big screen, high resolution, clear bright colors. The images are very sharp and detailed. There is so much detail in the images, it's almost like being there. Photos have more detail in both the highlights and shadows than any other monitor I have used. I love this monitor.

With the default settings, the monitor was a little too bright, so I turned the brightness down to 50 and then profiled the monitor with my Monico Optix XR color puck. Now the monitor produces less bright and more natural colors. The photos show more detail in both highlight and shadow areas than any previous monitor. The built-in 1080P HDTV works great too. It automatically found all of my DTV stations without a cable box -- in fact it found even more than my cable box shows. Standard DVDs look very good on it too. The monitor was easy to setup and use both as a monitor and as a TV. The remote is just the right size, with all the essential buttons and enough space between them for even my large fingers. The remote lets you switch between TV mode and monitor mode with a single button push.

Initially I couldn't play Blu-ray movies on this monitor and the Cyberlink Blu-ray advisor reported a digital connection that didn't support HDCP. The problem turned out to be lack on HDCP support in the GeForce 7600GT video card. I upgraded the video card to a GeForce 9800GT and now Blu-ray movies play just fine. Blu-ray movies have a little more detail, but standard DVDs look great too.

The screen seems to have an anti-glare feature -- light coming in my window that used to cause glare on my other monitors, is not a problem on this monitor. I haven't verified this in the specs, but it just seems to have less of a glare problem than other monitors.

Now that I have this large widescreen monitor, I've started watching DVDs and instant Netflix movies on it. Both look great. With a high speed connection, the instant view movies look almost as good as DVDs.

I still have a 19inch monitor to the side of this one for games that don't display well at this resolution. It also adds as an overflow monitor when I get lots of stuff running.

This monitor is a little slow to wake up after being asleep (Windows power management). I discovered that it wakes up better when detecting a mouse click than just moving the mouse.

I tried using the monitor from both the HDMI and DVI connectors and found no noticeable difference in display quality.

The sound quality from the built-in speakers is okay for watching standard TV, but I normally use my Logitech THX-certified Z-2300 speakers which are much better. When using the T260HD as a TV I let the sound come out of its own speakers, but when using it as a monitor, the sound routes through the Logitech Z-2300 speakers. They have excellent sound for both movies and gaming and are only $83 on Amazon.

If you are thinking of getting one of these monitors, just do it. You will love it.
GREAT TV / MONITOR COMBO

I just want to address a few things. For viewing television, the picture is amazingly good. Playstation 3 looks awesome... literally the best that I've seen.
When used as a monitor... The color profile for any PC monitor is always controlled by the graphics card, so you have to go into the settings of your graphics card and tweak everything to make it look right... once you take the time to do that, it looks great.

The 'auto tune' feature for adding channels takes a long time and doesn't work that great, but any channel that you punch in will automatically be saved, so it's not a big deal. Analog signals take a couple seconds to tune in, but digital signals are quicker. Sometimes analog signals won't tune in on the first try, but not often.

There are no standard A/V inputs (RCA yellow, red, white). The verticle viewing angle could be better. There is really no way to mount it (although it has an Ex-Link port for hooking up to a motorized mount...???).
Another reviewer said there is only an optical audio output, but there is a standard 3.5mm audio output on the side, it's just not on the back.
The built in speakers would be considered good for a monitor but not great for a TV
Aspect ratio choices are: full wide 16:10, wide 16:9, 4:3, wide zoom 1, and wide zoom 2.
Buy it.
Superb combination HDTV/monitor, and great price!

SHORT VERSION:
Especially with its low price, the T260HD is easily one of the best multi-purpose, high-resolution LCD monitor/HDTV displays on the market. That's "full" (1080p) HDTV, by the way. Start with the complete "television" features and performance, add the excellent computer-monitor capabilities and connectivity, and this product is a winner.

LONG VERSION:
The people who whine about the Samsung T260HD's color-rendition, or viewing angle, or suitability in general as a computer monitor are: (A) wrong; (B) wrong; and (C) using the wrong computer "platform" (or at least a low-quality video-card). If your cable-TV shows look great on this display but your computer output looks blah, maybe you have a blah computer? And keep in mind that this is an LCD ("liquid crystal diode") monitor; attempting "perfect" color-rendition on an LCD screen (even a gem like the Apple Cinema Display) is like.... Oh, never mind.

We use Macintosh G5, G4, and G3 computers. I was reluctantly replacing an old SONY 22" CRT (cathode-ray tube) multisync Trinitron monitor which for too many years delivered professional-quality, calibrated colors. If I were still designing for both PRINT as well the Web, I would have simply gotten another Trinitron CRT. Photo-editing and color-matching for print publication require the best computer display you can afford. But for Web or video design, a top-quality fast LCD or LED display is fine, assuming that you calibrate the monitor and then compare your images displayed on a wide variety of PCs, Macs, LCDs (especially cheap laptops), and CRT monitors. In print or photo-output, you should aim for "perfect" color; but on the Web, with MILLIONS of different video-cards. browsers, displays, screen settings. etc, you're shooting for "mainstream." Remember, most computer users barely know how to tweak brightness and contrast, but certainly not gamma, white point, luminance, and so on. So what you see is rarely what they get.

If you buy this HDTV/monitor, familiarize yourself thoroughly with its adjustable onscreen display settings (via the remote control's "MENU" button). There's a lot to learn, but you can get excellent color and resolution from your computer if you master its own display controls (Mac OS X: System Preferences > Displays > Display & Color/Calibrate) and also the T260HD's onscreen controls. Here's what I learned....

-- The T260HD actually has more contrast and brightness available than you might need. I dispensed with Apple's generic instruction to run the monitor at highest possible contrast, because AFTER calibration the darkest screen images were simply too dark. I also reduced slightly the monitor's RED "gain" (Picture Options) for better color balance at all times; your display MIGHT need similar tweaks.

-- This display does show very slight variation in color-saturation and brightness as your eyes traverse the vertical viewing angle (bob your head up and down). Read other reviews here to find out why. I just tilt the T260HD screen until it "looks good," which it certainly does at all normal angles. But if this level of fuss might matter to you, go to a big TV/monitor showroom, ask to see LCD screens with wide and then narrow vertical/horizontal viewing-angles. Note the prices, then decide.

-- The T260HD has Sharpness control, which can significantly affect the quality of computer-interface elements. After everything has been color-calibrated, check the text on the computer's main/top menu; if text characters are too jaggy or have too much white halo, reduce the sharpness a little. Conversely, raising sharpness slightly acts exactly like Photoshop's filters, but across your entire screen. Cool.

-- I run the T260HD at 1280x800 pixels (not native 1920x1200 max resolution), which still produces a very sharp, undistorted wide-landscape desktop image -- with an expanded, zoomed-in look (60-dpi not WYSIWYG 72-dpi) that old eyes really appreciate. Before calibrating color, test the T260HD's many display-resolution settings; some obviously distort/stretch the computer output, and others produce jagged-edged text and interface elements. The T260HD's native 1920x1200 resolution is very sharp, lets you display many windows simultaneously etc, but at that resolution (almost 90-dpi) may force you to place your forehead on the screen to read small text.

Cosmetics....
-- The TV-style, glossy black cabinet with clear/red "Touch of Color" acrylic bezel is nice, especially if you, like me, enjoy that mysterious aquarium look. It's a sexy way to make your computer setup look Hollywood instead of ho-hum. However, the clear thin bezel provides a sharp perimeter edge and corners which can be dented easily.
-- This is a smallish TV display for wall-mounting, but if you really must.... Wall Mount Bracket 24-25.5"
If you could only have one monitor/tv combination...

I'd get this.

I got this a couple days ago at BestBuy, which allowed me to look at it in person before buying.

One thing many people seem to forget is that first and foremost, it's a computer monitor. I got it because my Dad has poor vision and he needed the 25.5" screen size to see anything. As a monitor, it's fantastic. He's currently using the VGA port in the back to input video and his Intel Integrated Graphics processor is more than up for the task.

I've played PS3 games on it, watched DVDs, used it as a monitor for my laptop and my Dad's desktop, and it's basically perfect. I even did lag tests using a timer that outputted up to 1/1000th of a second (the monitor only refreshes at 60 Hz so it'd only see 1/100th of a second changes). There's no lag. Playing games will not cause lag on this HDTV, unlike many other LCD HDTVs.

The only thing that's not perfect about this is that it doesn't look good from the back (cables stick straight out and there's no cover), and there's no VESA mounts. But as it's going to sit on my desk with the back to the wall, I love it.
EXQUISITE MONITOR! A digital photographer's dream.

As a professional photographer, I am constantly looking for the best hardware to develop and enhance my work. I handed down my Gateway 24" LCD to my wife and I upgraded to this T260HD. This monitor is without a doubt one of the best monitors on the market today. And to have the capacity to display HDTV, DVDs/Blu-Rays, games and PC all with astonishing quality is the best value for dollar I have ever spent.

First off, it is HUGE! It is a piece-of-cake to have several windows/apps open simultaneously. Unless you're a gamer, I don't think you'll miss a dual-monitor setup one bit.

Secondly, the out-of-the-box color is fantastic, contrary to what some reviewers have stated. But DO NOT use the included software to calibrate the color on this monitor, it is really lacking. If you hook it up with the standard PC port, just use the AUTO function and it will be just about perfect, assuming you have a decent graphics card. My main computer is hooked up via the DVI-D port to an nVidia GT295 card and I used a Spyder3 to calibrate the monitor, and again, it is perfect. The high contrast ratio and brightness must be responsible for the output, text is ultra-sharp without being oversharp, colors are true, true and true, brightness and contrast are exceptional.

The rose accent and crystal bezel make this Samsung line stand out amongst the crowd, it is a truly beautiful addition to anyone's workspace or living room. But when you play a DVD through this unit, you know you've got something special. The 5ms response time gives you smooth, fluid rendering without a hitch (again with a proper card). I run the audio through a Denon amp with Klipsch speakers and it's almost a mini-theatre in our office.

I must say something about the viewing angle. If you do enough research, you'll see that this T260HD is a TN panel as opposed to an IPS panel. The main difference is that the viewing angle of a TN monitor is not as broad or wide as an IPS model. So as you move away from the screen going left, right, up or down, the screen darkens. If you multi-task and move around quite a bit, then a TN monitor is probably not for you. However, I don't know a single digital photographer who wanders around while photo-editing, I certainly don't. Photoshop and my digital darkroom have my undivided attention and focus. If your work habits are similar to mine, this monitor will be an absolute DREAM!

OK, I've been as honest as possible here and told you about the poor calibration software and the limitations of the viewing angle. The bottom line is if you have a capable calibration tool (i.e. Spyder3), a decent graphics card and processor, and you are mostly stationary when you're working, I firmly believe you will flip out over this monitor. I will probably buy another one to use in the family room. The picture this monitor puts out is at least equal to all of the high-end Dells, HPs or NECs I have seen. If you are a pro or semi-pro photographer, BUY THIS MONITOR!!!! You will not regret it.

Thanks for your time.

Great HD has never been so easy

Review Date: June 1, 2009
Reviewer: Daniel Limbach, Algonquin, IL United States
I've been researching 40-42" HD TVs for months, looking for the ideal match for my needs that fit my budget of under $1,000. I looked at plasmas, 120Hz LCDs, 40", 42", Sharp, Sony, Panasonic, Samsung, Vizio, Westinghouse, and LG.

I finally found it - on sale for almost two-hundred off (exactly eight-hundred-and-nine dollars). Would still be a great value at a thousand dollars.

I'd rather have too much control than too little with my electronics. The 42LH30 delivers all the control I want and more, but it also provides several nice presets for the type of content I'm watching (movies, sports, games, standard). It also lets me build 2 presets myself for exactly what I want. I can be picky or I can be lazy and still get a great picture for any situation.

The 50,000 dynamic contract ratio and 5ms refresh speed make for a superb picture/performance combo.

I was very close to going with a 120Hz 42" Vizio. They have been getting decent reviews. When the LG 42lh30 went on sale, it was a deal I could not refuse.

Some things I really like.

1) Outstanding picture (no compromises with colors)
2) Great performance (sports and movies don't judder at all so far)
3) Energy Star (several low power modes - I love flexibility)
4) Lighter than most (easy to hang on wall - I use an articulating arm)
5) Anti-glare awesomeness (I have lots of windows in my 3-seasons room)
6) Outstanding PC screen (when I just have to surf on the 42")
7) Upconverting DVDs look phenomenal (blu-ray player is next purchase)
8) Sound is more than acceptable on TV (I usually output audio to my Home Theater system if I will be watching for more than a few minutes)

Things I would change:

1) Only 3 HDMI ports (Fine for me now with cable box, DVD player, and PC)
2) I'd prefer a matte black bezel instead of a gloss finish
3) Maybe add an SD-card reader (my DVD player has SD and USB reader, fortunately)
Excellent HDTV

Reviewer: Ken,
I have had this TV for about four months now and I am very happy with my purchase.

I actually ordered the LG 42LG50 (through Amazon from TigerDirect) but they must have run out of them because they sent me the better LG 42LH30.

Excellent color, great response (for a 60Hz), SD signals (VCR) look surprisingly good, the menus are intuitive, the remote is laid out very well, and it has a great overall look.

The only down side that I wasn't expecting is that it has no analog audio out (no RCA L/R out) so you'll have to have a digital receiver if you want run the sound through external speakers.

Excellent TV Compared to the Competition. . . .

Have been searching for a nice 42" LCD 1080 and ran across this one. Compared to the competition LG seems to more than hold it's own, plus the price point is excellent. Other reviews share the good points so I won't go into them only to mention that I found this to be the best 'bang for the buck' in 1080 LCD 42" TV. While LG is not yet considered a major brand in America, I purchased many LG products when I lived in Thailand in 2005.

I found them to be excellent products then and still do now. Overseas LG sells all sorts of products. One could almost say it's the GE of Asia - except LG TV's are superior to any GE product - by a huge margin.

I also have a 50" Panasonic Plasma that I purchased a couple years ago when that model was rated #1 by Consumer Reports. This LG has a superior picture and is perfect for what I need it for.

If you buy one - you'll be happy.
My love for this LG

I am a woman, a gamer, and a movie fanatic. I asked my husband 6 months ago for my own lcd tv right after I got my xbox 360. I spent the weekend in awe. We have a 46 Sony Bravia (changed the inches since someone felt the need to correct it, LOL) in the family room and in my opinion it doesn't compare to my 42 LG. The features are user friendly and the HDMI cable just enhanced every feature about it. My movies were crisp and clear. I would recommend this tv above all else and the price was excellent. I wanted the 120hz because I thought I would have to worry about ghosting while gaming but this tv did not disappoint and I saved a couple hundred bucks. I searched and researched and searched again for a tv and I am happy with my choice. Extremely happy. I just need to wait patiently for Ghost Recon:The Future Soldier to come out and it would make it complete. For now, I'll just sit back and keep playing COD:MW2. Thanks LG.
Very nice LCD TV

Great set with very good picture quality. Lots of HDMI inputs but be aware there are no S video inputs. Only becomes an issue if you are trying to connect older components. There isn't any speaker outputs either. You can still run sound through your stereo by picking up sound output off your DVD or Bluray player directly.
